This book design was based of the Book Requiem for a Dream by Hubert Selby Jr.. It takes four characters through their own battles with addiction, which spirals out of control, and ends on a very sad note. As this spiral is spinning downward as the storyline goes on, switching from character to character, the idea came to mind to try to illustrate this spiral in the final design.
I combined visuals which I felt conveyed the sate of mind that the characters would have been addicted to, gritty distored paint splatters, with destressed type I was able to achieve the final look. Although the story itsself is quite dark, I felt the book cover needed to pop on the shelfs of book stores so that it would attract a wider audience. This is why I chose to stick with images that would be associated with the characters state of mind while on drugs. By creating a collage with the images you get a jist of what they might be, but it leaves it to the viewer to make these connections. The hand reaching out on the cover represents the characters trying to reach back out of their spiral of addiction, looking for help.
